Robot God Akamatsu by James Biggie and Frankie B. Washington

The Skinny

Robot God: AKAMATSU is a valentine to the Super Robot genre of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.  Giant robots and monsters attack Boston, and Robot God: Akamatsu (RGA, for short) is the city’s only form of defense!

RGA is also about the relationship between a father and his estranged son, about the abuse of power and how far some are willing to go to see their goals met.  It’s a little bit Ultraman, a little bit Voltron, a little bit Force Five, and a mighty dollop of Shogun Warriors.

RGA is naturally suited for all media – comics, animation, film, toys – and accessible to readers of all ages.

The Style

RGA is written and designed to be an episodic, cliffhanger series with larger reaching themes and ideas. Each episode features one major monster, and will explore the characters and their relationships to each other as the series progresses.

The script by James Biggie offers plenty of city-leveling action while also laying the groundwork, piece by piece, for a larger story concerning the RGA’s origin.  Each story is bigger than the last, reaching further and further toward an ultimate climax.

Artist Frankie B. Washington handles the visuals – kinetic art inspired by manga, animation, and TMNT-style black-and-white comics.  The result is a fast-paced, easily-accessible read.

The Story

Jin Akamatsu has been kicked out of another Ivy League school, and is returning home to tell his father, Ken Akamatsu.

‘Home’ for Jin is the massive scientific complex known as Sanctuary Base.  His Father is a scientist on the bleeding edge of technology involving dimensional travel.   It was Ken who discovered the remains of a giant robot (the RGA) of the coast of the Bahamas, a discovery that caused the death of Jin’s mother – a fact that Ken has kept hidden for years.

Before Jin arrives home, Ken and his colleague, Dr. Washington have just completed an experiment by sending a probe into another dimension.  To accomplish this, they use a dimensional gateway Ken developed called The Ring.

The probe, however, is followed back to our world! The giant monster known as LEVIATRON arrives on the scene, and Jin soon pilots the RGA in an attempt to stop Leviatron’s city-bashing destruction!  And what connection does this Leviatron have with the RGA itself? (hint: a big one!)
